A 56-year-old woman was shot in her home and one man suffered a leg injury walking nearby in a shooting incident in Waterbury this weekend, police said..
Police responded to a report of gunshots in the area of Walnut Street and Orange Street at about 1:15 p.m. on Saturday. When they arrived in the neighborhood, someone told them that a member of their family had been struck by a bullet while inside their home at 51 Walnut Street, according to the Waterbury Police Department.
Inside, police found Antongi Mabel Martinez laying on the floor suffering from a head injury, police said.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Saint Mary’s Hospital where she was considered to be in critical, police said. According to police, Martinez was pronounced dead at the hospital Sunday night.
Shortly after the woman was rushed to the hospital Saturday afternoon, a man walked into the Saint Mary’s emergency room at 2:08 p.m. and said he’d been shot. The 35-year-old was dropped off at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg. He told police he had been walking in the area of Walnut Street and Orange Street when he was struck by a bullet.
According to police, he was treated for non-life threatening injuries and was released.
Investigators believe both people were shot in the same incident and don’t think the woman was the intended target, police said.
