Floyd Mayweather protege Gervonta Davis ‘almost killed a man’ Vs Rolly Romero, KO punch, reaction

Floyd Mayweather protege Gervonta Davis has delivered a punch from nowhere which has sent shockwaves around the boxing world.

Gervonta Davis has shown why he is one of boxing’s biggest drawcards after he ended Rolando Romero with an insane knockout in the sixth round of their WBA lightweight title bout.

Davis brought the belt into the fight but had to cop an ugly lead up as the trash talk and bad blood dominated the lead up.

The protege of boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, Davis had to deal with some big shots from Romero which left a nasty looking welt on his left temple from the first round.

But Davis took his time and held back his weapon of a left hand until the sixth round when he unleashed the perfect left.

After dodging a right from Romero, Davis landed a straight left right on the button and knocked his rival out.

Romero legs left him immediately and the only thing that saved him from falling out of the ring was the ropes.

Romero did get to his feet but was incredibly shaky and the referee had no choice but to call an end to the fight in round six.

There was clearly some bad blood between the pair as Davis immediately ran up to Romero and his team and mocked him but was dragged away, while the challenger left the ring before the official results were declared.

In front of a vocal and pro-Davis crowd, the champ was thankful after the win.

“I want to thank New York City baby,” Davis said after the fight. “I won my first belt here, it was great to come back to New York City and do it again.

“As much as I wanted to be cocky, I wanted to thank Rolly, I want to thank his team, he settled it like a man inside the ring and I wish him the best in the future.”

Davis said that Romero landed some shot early but that knew he could wait for the shot.

And even scarier, Davis said the shot wasn’t a full blooded shot.

“The crazy thing is I didn’t even throw that hard, I just through it, he just ran into it,” Davis said.

But while Davis didn’t swing from the fences, the impact of the shot was felt widely as the boxing world stood up and took notice.

Former Aussie world title challenger Billy Dib tweeted: “Tank by far the best LIGHTWEIGHT in the world. Scary.”

Former boxer Ishé Smith wrote: “Got his dumb a** knocked out, best I seen Tank look. Patient and calm, good s**t”.

ESPN’s Myron Medcalf wrote: “Romero gave it everything he had. Fought courageously. But it only takes one punch for Tank Davis to change everything. Now, stop messing around and set up Haney, Loma and the other great talents at 135/140 and give fans what they deserve.”

ESPN’s Sid Ventura added: “Wow, Tank Davis with a one-punch TKO from out of nowhere.”

Fox’s Morgan Adsit said: “Tank Davis stays unbeaten and a champ, just KO’d Rolando Romero with his big left power. I don’t think Romero knows where he is right now.”

The lightweight division is on fire at the moment as the boxing world awaits next week’s clash between Aussie George Kambosos Jr. and Devin Haney at Marvel Stadium with the chance to become the eighth undisputed champion in any division in the four-belt era.

The likes of Davis, Vasyl Lomachenko and Ryan Garcia are just some of the names waiting in the wings.
