China to release Pacific ‘position paper’

Beijing appears to have shelved its proposal for a sweeping security pact with ten Pacific island nations amid concerns about “specific issues” from local leaders.

It comes as China claims it is willing to cooperate with Australia in the Pacific – marking a clear shift in rhetoric and diplomacy.

The region-wide agreement sought to cover policing, security and cyber cooperation.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Pacific counterparts in Fiji in a bid to encourage those nations to sign up to the deal.

Mr Yi told reporters China would instead release a “position paper” on its engagement in the region, to better shape consensus.
